B
BENEFITS OF
AN EDITOR
When you hire me, you’re getting someone who is:
-
Proficient: Possesses more than 30 years of professional experience in the copy editing/proofreading and publishing industry, both in Canada and the United States.
-
Published: Copy edited 33 published books, 16 of which contain my editor credit, plus one play.
-
Reliable: Adheres to most (tight) deadlines, without fail.
-
Quick: Types 65+ words per minute with a high rate of accuracy.
-
Reachable: Works in a well-equipped home office and can be reached via FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, Google Meet, email, iPhone and text almost anytime.
-
Commits to editing any text with a high standard of excellence and accuracy.
-
An Eagle-Eyed Perfectionist: With an advanced, almost innate, ability edit almost any English document/text, I correct, refine and polish its grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure until I deem it good enough for the public.
-
Knowledgeable: Won spelling bees as a child and excelled in all my English classes (for my English major) in college (University at Albany).
-
“Style-ish”: Well-versed in the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook, Chicago Manual of Style, APA, AMA, MLA and the Canadian Press (CP) Stylebook.
-
Versatile: Fluent in three English dialects: American, Canadian and British English.
-
Hardworking: I ensure that the writer’s voice, words and meaning shine through—not the errors.
-
ALWAYS REMEMBER: Everyone can use a good editor. Everyone—including big companies and corporations; lawyers’ offices; retail stores (corporate HQs); mall corporate offices; companies that build, demolish, create and inform the public about things; law enforcement; fire stations; schools; publishers and producers; computer companies; every blue-collar company; smart TV apps and smart TVs; companies that make products (food, clothes, furniture, etc.) for consumers; pharmaceutical companies; advertising/marketing agencies; print publications; even movie studios, television stations and TV and online news channels—is going to advertise and/or market their company at some point in its life. It will be then that they will require a good editor, such as the below snowplowing company does, in their medium-sized ad in a small, mailed-out advertising booklet:

Below is another example of a company needing a copy editor/proofreader urgently. The photos below are from an article that a major Canadian television news channel published online and on its mobile app on December 31, 2021. The first photo mentions the name of a street in Ottawa, Canada, which is officially spelled as: Jeanne D'Arc Blvd. However, in the photo caption, the street is misspelled — it's lacking the second "n" and "e", on top of missing the "Blvd.".

This second photo (below) is another example of a (the same) company needing a copy editor/proofreader urgently. The below photo is from the same article (as above) and mentions the name of the same street, which is officially spelled as: Jeanne D'Arc Blvd. However, in the below photo of the article text, the street is once again misspelled yet another way — "Jeane" is lacking the second "n" and the "Blvd" is lacking its period (since Blvd. is an abbreviation).

AGAIN ... REMEMBER:
Everyone can use a good editor,
regardless of if they know it or not.

Working Process:
-
I am an efficient, deadline-oriented self-starter who thrives in a home-office environment.
-
Usually go through the text twice: The first pass is the more detailed edit. The second pass is a quick proofreading to see the bigger picture (name/place spelling inconsistencies, story/article flow, paragraph transitions and awkward/run-on sentences) and catch anything that was missed during the first pass.
-
If the author sends back the manuscript/document with enough changes, and after all the revisions are made, a third editing pass may have to be done to ensure the text still makes sense, along with possibly re-checking everything mentioned above.
Styles:
-
Editing and proofreading is based on the Associated Press Stylebook, Chicago Manual of Style or Canadian Press Stylebook, combined with the Merriam-Webster’s New World College Dictionary or Canadian Oxford Dictionary of English. Also familiar with MLA, APA and AMA styles.
-
Editor’s proofreading and copy editing skills combine with efficiency, accuracy and creativity to clarify authors’ words.
Language Skills:
-
American/U.S. English
-
Canadian English
-
British English
The Results:
-
The author's voice and style are always maintained.
-
Clarity and accuracy of the English language.
-
A well-written, clear text: Your message takes center stage, not the errors.
-
Company/personal websites, blogs, manuscripts, reports, etc. give the impression of being more trustworthy when not riddled with mistakes.
Typing/Computer Skills:
-
65+ words per minute with a high rate of accuracy.
-
Use MS Word's Track Changes feature daily and can edit in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
-
Work on iMac (Mac OS X Catalina) w/2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, plus 8 GB RAM.
